Darlington's fine arts department will present "The Sound of Music" Feb. 14-16 at Rome City Auditorium. Friday and Saturday shows will be at 7:30 p.m. with a Sunday matinee at 2:30 p.m.
A classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, "The Sound of Music" is set in Austria just before World War II. Inspired by true events and people, the show follows a young woman, Maria, as she transitions from life at Nonnberg Abbey to life in the von Trapp home -- a home bustling with the energy of seven children, despite the leadership of a joyless single father. As governess to the children, Maria brings music back into Captain von Trapp's home, and in the process changes all of their lives.
Freshman Palesa Molapo will play Maria in Darlington's production, alongside junior Abraham Johnson as Captain von Trapp. Sophomore Chase Brooks plays the Captain's friend, Max, and senior Reeves Trivette plays Elsa -- a woman vying for the affections of the Captain. The seven von Trapp children range from grades 3-10, and junior Ella Peek plays the Mother Abbess.
"My favorite part of this show is the fact that we have so many different ages represented in the cast," said John Plough, theater director. "Watching our student actors bond and become a family is such a delight. Walking into a rehearsal room and seeing a group of kids giving each other piggyback rides and singing their hearts out -- before rehearsal has started -- is the best way to spend an afternoon."
There are countless recognizable tunes in the show, including "The Sound of Music," "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," "The Lonely Goatherd," "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" and "Edelweiss." And, of course, the von Trapp children sing their goodnight message in "So Long, Farewell."
Nearly 30 students will be taking the stage in "The Sound of Music," and, according to Plough, there may even be some cameos from faculty and staff members. In addition, many students will be helping behind the scenes with lighting, sound, costumes and as stage crew.
"It's truly a family affair as the Darlington family brings the story of the von Trapp family to Rome!" Plough said. "Hope everyone will come out and see the shows."
Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children, students and senior citizens. Tickets are available at Kroger, Traditions of Rome, and at the Darlington Bookstore in Wilcox Hall. They may also be purchased from Wendy Payne at ELA-8. Tickets will be available at the door. Reserved seats are $15 and must be purchased online at www.darlingtonschool.org/musical.
