Senior A.J. White has earned the distinguished honor of being named a Morehead-Cain Scholar by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Less than four percent of students who apply for this elite scholarship are selected to receive it.

The Morehead-Cain Scholarship provides a full four-year scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that includes an annual stipend that covers full tuition and other expenses; a fully funded, four-year Summer Enrichment Program made up of diverse, customized experiences; Discovery Fund grants to be used for educational opportunities; and a laptop computer.

White, the son of Ken and Terri White of Rome, is one of only 70 young leaders to be accepted for this remarkable opportunity for 2010-11. His first summer enrichment opportunity will be an outdoor leadership course this summer, to be followed by public service, international research and private enterprise.

White has taken 10 honors and nine AP courses at Darlington. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Cum Laude Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, the varsity football and track teams, and has received the STAR Student Award, the Georgia Certificate of Merit, the Sewanee Club Award, the Yale Book Award, and the Phi Beta Kappa Book Award. A Centre College Fellow and Furman Scholar, he is also a two-time recipient of the Hanks Medal; a three-time recipient of the Class Scholarship Award; and has earned E.L. Wright Awards for Algebra 1H, Spanish 3H, English 1H, Geometry H, Spanish 4H, AP World History, AP Physics B, AP U.S. History and AP English Language.

Darlington School is one of 421 institutions outside the state of North Carolina that is eligible to nominate Morehead-Cain Scholars. Applicants from these schools compete for a limited number of slots each year. Darlington has been nominating students for this prestigious scholarship program since 1987.
