Juniors Nixon Prior and Angeline Myrie were recently selected as two of five Georgia winners in the 2023 National Society of the Colonial Dames of America Congressional essay competition.

The competition required students to submit an essay addressing why the United States developed a government system that differed from the parliamentary system of England. Both students worked with their AP U.S. History instructor, Heather Shores, to compose their essays, with additional input from AP U.S. Government instructor, Brant Evans. The essays were among the five highest ranked in the state of Georgia, with Prior's essay earning first place.

As state winners in this competition, both students have received a full scholarship to attend a week-long citizenship program in Washington, D.C., in June 2024. They will also attend the March meeting for the Rome Chapter of the National Society for the Colonial Dames of America to present their papers and receive local recognition.
