Episode 72: A Look Into College Advising

Welcome to Episode 72 of The Darlington Podcast! 

In this episode, Dean of College Guidance Ivy Brewer talks with new college advisors Jaclyn Haynes, Sam Clark, Toni King and Jared Willerson. College advisors attended conferences and college tours this summer in order to learn more about the field of college guidance and the ever-changing world of college admission. Together with Brewer, they share the most important takeaways they learned at their respective conferences and tours. 

Ivy Brewer has been a member of Darlington’s college guidance staff since 2007. As associate dean of college guidance, she has visited more than 200 college campuses and has been designated a Certified Educational Planner. Ivy holds a B.A. from the University of Georgia, an M.A. from Florida Gulf Coast University and graduate certificate in college counseling from University of California Los Angeles Extension. 

Jaclyn Haynes has served as Upper School chemistry and environmental science teacher since 2019. She holds a B.S. in Biology from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Ga., and Master of Education in Educational Technology from Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass. She has also completed graduate-level gifted coursework at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Jaclyn has nearly two decades of teaching experience and has taught science at several area high schools.

Sam Clark has taught Upper School English, served as a college advisor, and served on the residential duty staff since 2017. He coaches volleyball in the fall and boys' lacrosse in the spring. Sam holds a B.A. in English­ from Rhodes College, where he also played lacrosse and worked as an editor for two newspapers, and is currently pursuing an M.A. from the Middlebury Bread Loaf School of English.

Toni King has served as Upper School biology and anatomy and physiology teacher since 2019. With over 20 years of research and collegiate-level instruction, she came to Darlington from Georgia Highlands College, where was an adjunct instruction in the Division of Natural Sciences. She holds a B.S. in Microbiology from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., and a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. Toni was a postdoctoral research fellow in molecular oncology at Washington University in St. Louis, Miss., and in microbiology and immunology at Northwestern University in Chicago, Ill.

Jared Willerson has taught history at the Upper School in addition to serving as head volleyball coach and assistant boys' basketball coach since 2017. He holds a B.S. in Business Finance from the University of Tennessee - Chattanooga and an M.A. in Teaching, Learning and Corporate Training from Lee University. Jared has taught economics at Chickamauga City Schools for the past 14 years. He has also coached basketball, volleyball and golf.
