Senior Emmaline Ratledge has been named Noon Optimist Student of the Month for October.

"Emmaline is a hard worker, cool thinker and reliable partner in groups," said Brendan Leezer, her former adviser and Physics teacher. "She always works to get the task at hand accomplished while also having fun in the process and makes sure those around her do the same."

A day student who has been enrolled at Darlington since ninth grade, Ratledge has taken 10 Honors and AP courses during her high school career and serves as a dorm leader and activities planner for Thornwood House. She is a two-year member of the varsity volleyball and softball teams and a four-year member of the varsity basketball and track teams. Last season, she won third place in the 100-meter hurdles at the state track meet and received the team's Most Valuable Performer Award. She also received the Pillar Award for girls' basketball. Ratledge has served as a counselor at Darlington's summer Youth Basketball Camp and Camp Delightascope.

"It has been an honor to teach and coach Emmaline over the past few years," said Kevin Hunt, head track coach. "She excels in everything she does on and off the field, court, and track. She is a very determined, disciplined, and dedicated young lady that takes great pride in being the best she can be."

The daughter of Mary and Dean Ratledge of Rome, Emmaline will be honored at an Optimist Club luncheon on Oct. 25.
