Senior Ventures Spotlight: Neal Yin

I have only arranged and composed small pieces before, so the completion of this project will definitely be a breakthrough in my understanding of orchestration. While working on my compostion, I have been improvising on the piano, recording myself, and then transcribing my recordings onto a sheet music app called MuseScore. Once the composition is complete, I would love for it to become a small service project, wherein capable students could volunteer to perform the piece locally. I will assist with organizing the event, and proceeds would be contributed to promote local musical education. In addition to working on the composition, I have been expanding my music in other ways.

About a year ago, classmates Nick Powell ('20), Elliot Luitwieler ('22), and I formed our band, Bottlehead. We performed at  Light the Lake last spring, and we recently performed in The Hub during office hours. To learn more about The Hub performance, visit this link

During the first phase of Senior Ventures, I composed a piano/cello duet for classmate Sophie Jin ('20) as the background soundtrack of her collaborative arts project. She needed a composition she could dance to for her portfolio for college admissions. Here is a video of her dancing to my composition:

I am thankful to my Darlington mentors Mr. Ben McVety and Mrs. Kim Tunnell. They have assisted me with orchestration techniques and have supported me throughout the process.

The Senior Ventures leadership program is a year-long senior project built on a framework of leadership, innovation, and community engagement. The topic and the project design is chosen by an individual student or a pair of students, and the journey is guided by Darlington faculty as well as mentors in the community. Most projects fall into one of the following categories: Investigation, Performance, Entrepreneurship, and Outreach. Candidates are selected according to proposal quality, feasibility, and commitment.
