“I go where the brush takes me.”

In my art class I always have an artist quote posted, which relates to our current project. The other day in my art block class of 21 eighth-graders, it was music to my ears when one student declared that another student had just shared the most encouraging statement; "I go where the brush takes me."

I love it! My face was beaming with pride.

Just so you know, I often get a little overly enthusiastic about little things, especially when it comes to students connecting with the philosophy I have about art and creativity. When you think about it, this notion is actually not a very little thing at all. This is HUGE!

I was thrilled that this student was embracing the freedom to create without fear. The ability to have a positive attitude and go with the flow through the ups and downs, learning from our struggles along the way is so important as students learn to persevere through challenges and build their confidence in art class.

My hope is to instill this courage in all of my students.

I want them to understand that as our good friend Bob Ross says, "We don't make mistakes, only happy little accidents."

In the future I will not only quote the more well known artists, I will be quoting our very own Darlington student artists! I hope that we can all embrace the idea in ART as well as in LIFE to "go where the brush takes us!" Who knows? You might just learn something new along the way!
