This experienced educator works within and leads the Pre-K to 8 Library Services program to foster multi-disciplinary collections, spaces, and programs that support active student learning and teaching excellence for the broad range of Pre-K to 8 students. This academic leader works to build awareness and engagement among members of the Pre-K to 8 community regarding existing and new library resources and program offerings, and collaborates with groups to maximize use of those resources.

Qualifications

  • MLS or Master’s degree in a relevant field along with related experience 
  • Ability to communicate and work well with people in one-on-one and group situations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills enabling the position to foster a sense of collaboration and unity among teachers, parents, and students.
  • History of continued professional growth and the ability and desire to help others do the same.
  • Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Can use experience, judgment, creativity, and independence to plan and accomplish goals

Responsibilities

  • Plans, implements, and evaluates various school library programs that promote enthusiastic readership including (but not limited to) book clubs, summer reading incentive programs, and author visits.
  • Instructs students on a formal and informal basis in skills related to navigating the library, reading with purpose, the research process, ethical responsibilities of scholarship, and presenting and applying information. 
  • Collaborates with teachers and others to identify links across student information needs, curricular content, learning outcomes, and a wide variety of print, non-print, and electronic information resources. 
  • Integrates information skills throughout the school’s instructional program. 
  • Assists teachers in promoting reading and provides reading experiences for students. 
  • Monitors rights and responsibilities of users relating to the generation and flow of information and ideas, i.e. Copyright Law, confidentiality/privacy, and intellectual freedom. 
  • Provides access to information and ideas by assisting students and faculty in identifying information resources and in interpreting and communicating intellectual content. 
  • Arranges for flexible scheduling of facilities, collections to meet the needs of individuals, small groups, and whole classes for research, browsing, recreational reading, viewing or listening.
  • Carries out and/or manages all basic day-to-day responsibilities in the library and duties within the division. 
  • Keeps abreast of current literature by reading review journals and other selection sources. 
  • Continually updates professional expertise necessary to function effectively in the librarian role. 
  • Networks with other professionals through local, state, and national organizations.
  • Advises 6th through 8th grade students
  • Teaches 6th through 8th grade exploratory class
  • Various other responsibilities may include supervising students at times outside class (car line, lunch, recess, after school), grade level meetings, weekly faculty meetings or professional learning communities, substituting, committee meetings, professional development, weekend/campus activities, campus events (i.e. parent open houses, admission, etc)
