Director of Student Health Center

Responsibilities related to management of medical operations:

  • Maintain inventory of all medications, medical supplies and equipment. Order supplies as needed, within budgetary parameters.
  • Collaborate with Admission, Student Life, and the athletic trainers to ensure proper and current documentation is on file for each student in the Upper School (e.g. medical records, insurance, physicals, and vaccinations).  
  • Ensure adequate and competent staffing through interviewing and hiring of new personnel, maintaining a schedule for staff, creating policy. Keep a copy of all nurses’ license and malpractice insurance policies on file.
  • Ensure the campus AEDs are monitored on a monthly preventative maintenance schedule.
  • Maintain proper state and federal licensing for dispensary and medical waste transportation, ensuring compliance with the DEA and other agencies.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Information Technology to maintain administrative functions of the Health Center (e.g. implement electronic medical records, accident reports, student history, supplies, etc.)
  • Participate as needed on school committees or community-wide committees to promote health and awareness (e.g. enrollment, allergies, and pandemic flu preparedness).
  • Establish and communicate school protocols for emergent public health issues (e.g. SARS, H1N1, COVID-19, and Ebola).
  • Research topics of interest in the health setting and disseminate information to school officials as indicated.
  • Create and maintain the yearly student allergy list. Distribute to FLIK dining services staff, Student Life Office, heads of house, athletic department, and division administrators.
  • Participate as an active member of the Student Support Team. 
  • Conduct periodic staff meetings and in service training.
  • Prepare and maintain nursing policy and procedures manual.
  • Monitor the budget of the Health Center.
  • Encourage continuing education in all staff members.
  • Evaluate staff annually.

 

Responsibilities related to direct primary care:

  • Administer primary care; provide assessment, examination and referrals according to written medical directives. Assess data collected and make primary decisions on the health management of individual students, faculty, and staff.
  • Communicate with the Student Life Office, head of house, and parents if students are too ill for class. 
  • Provide follow-up care, including medication and treatments.
  • Collaborate with the heads of house, athletic trainers, Teaching and Learning Center, and other health service personnel in establishing diagnosis, plan of care, and evaluation (e.g. concussions, Mononucleosis, or other major illness).
  • Assume responsibility for follow-up services, such as laboratory work, tests and referrals to specialists, as well as respond to medical directives for referral of seriously ill patients to the school administrative staff and parents.
  • Supervise and manage the scheduling of on- and off-campus appointments with local medical professionals.
  • Complete accident reports for all residential students and maintain database history.
  • Collaborate with the Counseling Office to allow patients to cope with presenting issues, as necessary.

 

Qualifications

  • The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to honor and integrity, courageous decision making, and a desire to promote a student-centered experience.
  • Strong computer skills are a must. 
  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required and experience in Health Services Management is preferred.
